Khun Mai: Bangkok’s Best Roti

Khun Mai, located in the Islamic quarter near the Haroon Mosque, is known for serving the best roti in Bangkok. This small stall is popular for its perfectly crispy and soft rotis, attracting both locals and visitors. The simple, no-frills setup adds to its appeal, offering an authentic and tasty experience. If you’re in the area, stopping by for a delicious roti is highly recommended.
Name (Thai): โรตีมะตะบะ คุณใหม่
Address: 13 Charoen Krung Road, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500
Opening Hours: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM, closed on Sundays
Pricer Per Roti: 20 baht
The rotis at Khun Mai are a perfect balance of textures – slightly crisp on the outside while remaining soft and fluffy on the inside. Unlike most Thai rotis, these are relatively thick and quite filling, making them a satisfying snack or even a light meal. At just 20 baht per roti, it’s a great deal. You can enjoy them plain or with a sprinkle of sugar for a touch of sweetness.
One of the secrets to Khun Mai’s amazing rotis is that she ferments the dough overnight and cooks them in coconut oil, which adds a subtle, delicious flavor – the quality of her rotis is top-notch for Thai street food.
The shop also serves roti mataba, which is equally delicious. Whether you’re in the mood for something simple or a bit more substantial, Khun Mai has you covered. The friendly atmosphere and affordable prices make it a must-visit spot in Bangkok.

Thai roti is a popular street food that differs significantly from other types of roti found in various parts of the world. Traditionally, roti is a type of flatbread, but Thai roti is more of a dessert or snack rather than a staple food. It is made from a simple dough of flour, water, and a bit of oil, which is kneaded and then stretched thin. The dough is cooked on a hot griddle with oil, which gives it a delightful crispiness.
What sets Thai roti apart from other rotis is its preparation and serving style. Unlike the Indian roti, which is typically savory and accompanies main dishes, Thai roti is often sweet. It is commonly served with condensed milk, sugar, or banana, making it a popular treat. You can also find it with other toppings like chocolate sauce, egg, or even cheese, which adds to its versatility.
The history of Thai roti can be traced back to the influence of Indian cuisine, brought to Thailand by Indian and Muslim immigrants. The word “roti” itself is derived from the Hindi word for bread. These immigrants introduced the concept of flatbreads, which gradually adapted to local tastes and ingredients over time.
In Thailand, roti became popularized as a street food, especially in areas with significant Muslim populations. It evolved from the traditional Indian roti, which is typically a savory bread served with curries, into a sweet and versatile snack. One key adaptation is the use of coconut oil instead of ghee or other types of oil, which gives Thai roti a distinct flavor and texture.
As Thai roti spread across the country, vendors began to experiment with different fillings and toppings, making it a highly customizable and beloved treat. Common toppings like condensed milk and sugar were introduced, reflecting the Thai preference for sweet flavors. Over time, other variations emerged, such as roti with banana, egg, or chocolate sauce, further cementing its status as a favorite street food.
