Thai Ban Mai, a local community near the Kheha BTS station, offers an authentic slice of everyday Thai life that’s perfect for street photography.
As you step off the BTS and make your way into Thai Ban Mai, you’re immediately transported into a world that feels a million miles away from the polished facades of downtown Bangkok. Narrow sois wind their way through a patchwork of old wooden houses and colorful shophouses.
The community’s lifeblood can be found in its local markets, where a riot of colors, textures, and characters await. Fresh produce vendors haggle with customers, street food cooks whip up aromatic dishes, and locals gossip over their daily shopping – each scene telling its own story.
For the best photographic opportunities, try visiting in the early morning or late afternoon when the community is at its most active. When photographing people, always ask permission before taking close-up portraits, and be mindful around religious sites.
A smile and a few words in Thai can go a long way in opening doors and creating opportunities for more intimate photographs. Don’t be afraid to explore the back alleys – some of the most interesting scenes are tucked away in the less traveled parts of the neighborhood.
Getting to Thai Ban Mai is easy. Take the BTS to Kheha station and exit towards Soi Thetsaban Bang Pu 54. A short walk or motorbike taxi ride will bring you into the heart of the community.
