There are several ways to get from Bangkok to Koh Chang, and each option has its pros and cons:

By Bus and Ferry: The most budget-friendly and popular route is taking a bus from Bangkok’s Ekkamai Bus Station. You’ll want to catch a bus to Trat province, which takes about 4-5 hours. From Trat, you’ll transfer to a ferry at one of two main piers – either Centerpoint Pier or Dan Tok Pier. The ferry ride takes around 30-45 minutes to reach the island. Total travel time is typically 5-6 hours and costs around 400-600 baht. This option is best pre-booked via 12GO.

By Private Transfer: If you prefer comfort and convenience, many tour companies offer door-to-door minivan services from Bangkok. These typically pick you up from your hotel, drive you to Trat, and include the ferry transfer. It’s more expensive (around 1000-1500 baht) but eliminates the hassle of changing transportation.

By Plane: The fastest option is flying to Trat Airport (TDX), which is served by Bangkok Airways. Flights take about 1 hour, and from the airport, you’ll take a shuttle bus and ferry to Koh Chang. This is the quickest but most expensive option, costing around 2500-3500 baht total.

Driving: If you’re feeling adventurous, you can drive yourself – it’s about a 4-5 hour drive from Bangkok to the ferry piers. Just be prepared for Thai road conditions and make sure you’re comfortable navigating.

During our trip to Koh Chang, we stumbled upon some absolute culinary gems that made our island experience unforgettable. El Barrio blew us away with Mexican food that was so authentic, we could’ve sworn we were back in California – it’s seriously the best Mexican cuisine we’ve found in all of Thailand. When pizza cravings hit, Little Italy became our go-to spot, serving up wood-fired pizzas that were crispy, perfectly seasoned, and totally scratch-made. 

For traditional Thai food, Nanny Restaurant was our absolute favorite – the kind of place where locals eat and every dish tasted like it was prepared with generations of family recipe wisdom. And when we wanted to unwind with a sunset drink, Rasta View was our absolute paradise – perched high with an unbelievable panoramic view of the island and ocean, it felt like we were sitting on top of the world with a cold drink in hand.

We found that 3 nights is the ideal length for exploring Koh Chang without feeling rushed. If you’re an active traveler who likes to move quickly, you can absolutely knock out the island’s highlights in that timeframe. 

Three nights allows you to relax, do the key activities, and get a real feel for the island without it becoming repetitive. If you’re really into super leisurely travel or want to do multiple day trips, you might stretch to four nights, but for most travelers, 3 nights is perfect for Koh Chang.

When we first arrived at Koh Chang, we were pleasantly surprised by its balance of accessibility and authenticity. Sure, it’s not the ultra-remote island paradise you might dream about, and the western side definitely has its fair share of resorts and tourist infrastructure. But compared to madhouse destinations like Samui or Phuket, Koh Chang feels wonderfully low-key. 

The moment we drove out and explored the eastern side of the island, we discovered a completely different world – quiet fishing villages, untouched beaches, and a sense of local life that felt genuine and unpackaged. While you’ll definitely encounter other travelers, especially during high season, Koh Chang still manages to maintain an authentic feel that makes you feel like you’re experiencing something closer to the “real” Thailand, not just another overhyped tourist trap. It’s the kind of place where you can find solitude if you’re willing to venture just a little bit off the beaten path.

After years of traversing Thailand’s islands and mainland, we can confidently say Koh Chang is about as safe as it gets. The island feels distinctly more relaxed compared to some of the more touristy destinations we’ve visited. Sure, you’ll want to do the usual traveler precautions – keep an eye on your belongings, be aware of your surroundings, and use common sense – but we never felt the slightest bit threatened.

The local community seems genuinely friendly and the tourism infrastructure is well-developed enough that you’re not dealing with the wild west scenario of some more remote destinations. The biggest “danger” is probably those steep, winding roads if you’re renting a motorbike – so just take it slow and wear a helmet. Traffic can be a bit chaotic, as it is everywhere in Thailand, but nothing out of the ordinary.

We’ve found the western side of the island, where most accommodations are, to be particularly safe and well-monitored. Local police and tourism authorities seem to take visitor safety seriously. Our advice? Relax, be aware but not paranoid, and enjoy the island. Koh Chang feels like one of those places where you can actually let your guard down a bit and just enjoy your vacation.
