Exploring Wat Phra Phutthabat in Saraburi
Wat Phra Phutthabat dates back to the 17th century, during the reign of King Songtham of Ayutthaya. The story goes that a hunter stumbled upon what seemed to be a large footprint embedded in the rock. After investigation, the footprint was declared to be that of the Buddha, and the king ordered a temple to be built around it. Since then, it has been a major pilgrimage site, attracting devout Buddhists from all over Thailand.
At the heart of Wat Phra Phutthabat is the revered footprint itself, housed inside an elaborate mondop (a square-shaped pavilion with a tiered roof). The footprint is massive—over a meter long—and enshrined in gold leaf, with devotees applying fresh layers as an act of merit-making. The footprint isn’t just an indentation in the rock; it features 108 auspicious symbols, each representing different aspects of Buddhist cosmology. Walking around it, you can see people bowing in prayer, making offerings, and pouring oil into lamps as part of their rituals.
One thing that stands out at Wat Phra Phutthabat is how much of a business hub it has become. The temple grounds are lined with vendors selling everything from amulets and blessed cloths to snacks and souvenirs. Some stalls specialize in herbal medicine, while others offer caged birds for release—a common Buddhist merit-making practice. To avoid the yelling of the vendors, we wandered around the less crowded areas of the grounds.
Around the backside of the grounds there’s a small trail leading up the hillside behind the complex. It’s an easy but rewarding climb, offering a quiet break from the crowded temple area. The path winds through trees and rocky outcrops, and at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the temple and surrounding countryside. It’s not a long hike—maybe 10 to 15 minutes—but it’s worth doing if you want a moment of solitude away from the crowds.
Wat Phra Phutthabat is an interesting mix of sacred history, religious devotion, and commercial activity. While the business aspect might detract from the sense of tranquility you’d expect from a temple, it also adds to its unique character. Whether you visit for the spiritual significance, the architecture, or simply to soak in the atmosphere, it’s a place that offers something different from the usual Thai temple experience.
